Tyler Perry's solution for the color controversy in Hollywood
There were not many movies in 2015 that featured an actor of color in prominent roles or even heavy budget movies. This actually had a ripple effect as there were no colored actors or actresses nominated for the Oscars this year.
This is not the first time this issue has been raised; it has been going on for decades with many protests against color-bias by the Academy. As a mark of protest this year, many popular celebrities, such as Jada Pinkett-Smith and director, Spike Lee and many other celebrities of color, have decided to boycott the ceremony this year.
Actress Whoopi Goldberg, who has won an Oscar before, has also voiced her discontentment over the racism. Goldberg actually blames the studios for not hiring people of color and making movies to feature them in the first place.
A very simple solution suggested by director and actor, Tyler Perry, is for the Oscar team to be more transparent with their system of selection. He simply says they need to reveal the voting figures so that everyone is aware of what actually goes on behind the Oscar scenes and how the winners are chosen. This would make it clear that the voting was not on the basis of racism.
There are many other actors like Lupita Nyong'o, and even George Clooney have raised this issue. Clooney continues to tell Hollywood to change its direction. However, he failed to hire an actor of color in the last four movies he directed.
